Why we bill in short cycles

Monthly billing is a convention inherited from telephony. For the workloads we host it is the wrong unit — and it quietly removes the pressure to stay worth paying for.

A developer working at a bright desk

Shardly bills weekly, cancellable every week. That is unusual enough that people ask why, and the answer has less to do with pricing theory than with what a long billing cycle does to a company's incentive to stay worth paying for.

The unit should match the commitment

Most of what we host starts as a side project. It gets built over a weekend, runs for a few weeks, and either finds an audience or quietly stops mattering. Charging a month at a time bills the second and third of those outcomes as though they were the first.

Short cycles are a discipline

A weekly cycle means a customer re-decides fifty-two times a year. It removes the option of coasting on an annual contract, and it makes every bad week visible in the numbers rather than in a churn report eleven months later.

Cancellation is one click, with no retention flow, no exit survey gate and no support ticket required. Files stay downloadable afterwards for the length of the retention window.
